In April/May 2019, a representative sample of 1,200 Austrians was surveyed about their perceived role as a citizen in society. Based on a visual reflection task (Vogel & Willems, 2020), citizens could position themselves with respect to what they believe they do for others and what others do for them. Building on Psychosocial Contract Theory, these answers are analyzed in relation to population demographics and public service motivation to understand prosocial attitudes and citizenship behavior. With this COVID-19 funding, an updated survey to the same target population can be conducted and the questionnaire framed in the current societal crisis. A comparison of both datasets will support practical and theoretical insights on how severe crises potentially change perceptions on one’s own role in society and the effects on prosocial behavior and citizenship.
